Description

In the dispersed settlement Hrastovec in the northern part of the wooded karst plateau Hrastovenjak lie the Hrastovec ponds, encompassing some 4.2 hectares. These were originally owned by the Counts Herberstein, who also owned the nearby Komarnik Lake. The area is an important habitat to some endangered plant and animal species – it was classified as a natural monument in 1992. The ponds are fringed by phragmites australis, bulrush and floating plants that offer a safe haven from predators to fish and other aquatic organisms.
